The notice doesn't appear to mention data recovery from the physical disks. Do you know if there is any information on the university pursuing data recovery here? There is an advanced form of data recovery involving analog reading of the magnetic fields over the platters, which can in theory recover bits even after they have been overwritten with other data. With this much research data lost, mention of such things rises.
