   I was first exposed to Nixie tubes in about 1968, when my father took
   me to his office (Marley Co, manufacturer of cooling towers) and saw a
   Wang desktop calculator.  Calling it a desktop calculator was somewhat
   optimistic, because a thick cable actually connected it to a
   suitcase-sized box in a nearby closet.
