   For a start, "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age
   of Show Business" by Neil Postman.
   Libcom.org used to have a copy online but they apparently had to remove
   it.
   The last chapter 'Who was right? Orwell or Huxley?' was turned into a
   cartoon meme:

   ...but the rest of the book describes in quite readable detail how
