The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will not rethink its
longstanding policy prohibiting defendants from publicly denying the
agency's accusations against them, saying Tuesday that revoking the
so-called gag rule would undermine public confidence in the markets by
allowing alleged wrongdoers to publicly cast doubt on the commission's
actions.
