Worries that Russia’s war of aggression may spread to Moldova are growing.

Russia’s borderlands are characterized by parcels of land inhabited by Russian speakers who the Kremlin claims a right to rule, and who can be used to justify military intervention.

The 250 mile long sliver of land on the east bank of the River Dniester known as Transnistria (or Pridnestrovie) is one such. The mood there, and in the country it belongs to, Moldova, is beginning to darken.

Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu has warned that the country is facing a “very dangerous new moment” after a series of explosions recently hit Transnistria, where around 1,500 locally raised Russian troops are based. FROM . . .
