Hi Bill & Kyoto University,

I skimmed Bill's tragic article about data loss and a translation of the
notice he said concluded the data was unrecoverable at
https://www.iimc.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ja/whatsnew/information/detail/211228056999.html
.

The notice doesn't appear to mention data recovery from the physical disks.
Do you know if there is any information on the university pursuing data
recovery here?

There is an advanced form of data recovery involving analog reading of the
magnetic fields over the platters, which can in theory recover bits even
after they have been overwritten with other data.

With this much research data lost, mention of such things rises.
