In the movie, they were beat by exactly that: microwave towers.  Ordinary quartz fibers have an index of refraction of about 1.42 at 1550 nanometer wavelength.My isotope-modified fibers should have an index of refraction 5.6% smaller, so the signal should go 5.6% faster.However, Starlink's system may beat both these systems, as it is low-earth-orbit.The 'horizon' of a satellite with an altitude of about 1 million feet (200 miles) is about 1230 miles.So, it is conceivable that such a satellite could be (temporarily) positioned between Kansas City and New York City to allow faster connection.  Alternatively, if Starlink's satellites had satellire-to-satellite communication, such connections might be more regular and not discontinuous.
