While it may be e2e, it's not strictly old school SMS.

Though perhaps slow inefficient unreliable costly censorable
tracked recorded etc, SMS can definitely be used to carry
encrypted messages, including the KEX protocols if not using PSK.

But where are the opensource apps that are hooking
into strict raw SMS to do just that?
