engaging a new environment is a pretty basic thing.  i'm not sure of
the specific pattern, but it's along the lines of

- observe a lot
- compare things to you rknown environment
- check these comparisons to verify they are true
- once new predictions of new things are correct, carefully engage the
envrionment, trying things

this can probalby be generalised and shifted a little to provide for
learning new modes
