I worked, in the 1980s, at Citicorp's R&D center in California, during the
transition from AT&Ts national microwave communications backbone to fiber
optic. I analyzed our plans and pointed out the relative ease of disruption
of the few cables, both dark and lit, routed along major highways by many
miniature "guillotines" around the fibers remotely controlled by pagers.
