One advance in cell-phone technology has been the use of WiFi as an alternative means of wireless connection, rather than relying on cell phone towers. If you are using your phone near a WiFi router (say, 30 feet away) it only needs to emit about 1/1000 of the energy than it would need to connecting to a 1000-foot-distant cell tower. ((30 x 30)/(1000 x 1000)) = about 1/1000
