That original ENIAC was about 10000x less powerful than a
pocket calculator, but it all had to start somewhere. Actually
Charles Babbage had it all down for in the 19th century conceptually
using mechanical difference and analytical engines, except for a
couple issues - concept of entropy had not been understood yet,
and they had major trouble making the gears he wanted to his
extremely precise specs. Recommend "The Difference Engine" by
Gibson & Sterling, cool alt-history book, more or less kicked
off steampunk (but don't judge it by that distinction alone)
