Latimer's employer at the time was the notable inventor and businessman 
Hiram Maxim, who claimed that Latimer falsely patented that method, when 
in fact it had been developed by Hiram Maxim.

But in any case, whether it was the thieving negro with no particular 
qualifications, or the businessman with a long history of inventing 
stuff, the fact is that Edison and Swan were first, and Hiram Maxim (or 
Latimer) was second.
