Then why did Chelsea consistently express dissatisfaction with the
role of "gay male" or even "transvestite", to the point of carving I
WANT into a chair and collapsing in a dissociative state?

Manning's performance at the Court Martial, following months of
intensive psychological torture, indicates an individual with enormous
resilience and self determination.  This "confession" also happens to
be a how-to guide, and it walked straight off the base and onto the
Internet as a "leak" in its own right:

That performance is not consistent with the unreliable malcontent who
should never have been allowed /near/ a secure compartment, per
official military records.  Either those records are bogus, or Chelsea
was falling apart for some particular reason or other.
