So in brief, The Facebook wants to assure that that The Facebook, its
DARPA investors, and whoever has broken into a given user's computer
have /exclusive/ access to that user's "private" comms.

- From a marketing perspective, as long as whatever they deploy is "good
enough" that it can not be easily demonstrated useless, mission
accomplished.  Not that it matters much:  Some people believe that The
Facebook is an appropriate venue for business and "serious" personal
communications, some know better, and as this is a question of basic
competence it is unlikely that a cryptographic fig leaf will change
the behavior of more than 1% of users' behavior for the worse.
