I may be wrong on this, just a personal opinion about bulgaria.

It came too fast, without any warnings signs. The system appeared to
work -- there was lack of some goods and services, not of first need
ones. Essentially there was no poverty. Nowadays, retired people are
literally poor. They can hardly afford to pay the food, bills and
medicines.

Extreme conspiracy theories claimed Gorbachov was in bed with CIA.
I doubt this could be possible without KGB's consent.
