Do not use any version earlier than today's. I just found and fixed
and simple but nasty bug.

Dumb, much? To combine two 16-bit items into one 32-bit word,
I used:

    x = (a<<16)&  b ;

because of the AND, that always gives zero. Of course it has
to be an OR.
