Why is MS licensing my hardware through their software?

What does a change in my motherboard have to do with the image of the
software on the hard drive? Why would adding a new hard drive or replacing
an existing one require MS's ok?

By purchasing MS products you are in effect selling them the rights to
your computer hardware.

I wonder if they'll pay the support bills?
