MIT uses Zephyr for text messaging.  It's not secure, but it can
authenticate with Kerberos.  

There are "homebrew" extensions to have encrypted sessions; basically,
since zephyr is 8-bit safe, you can put whatever you want inside the
message, including (non-armored) encrypted data.
