K6, 600MHz Alpha Lead CPU Advances

Advances om both RISC amd X86 processor architctures will result in more choices and lower prices for users. Last week, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., unveiled its K6, while Digital Equipment Corp. pushed the speed of its Alpha chip to 600MHz.
Motorola Inc.'s RISC Micro processor Division announced a 300MHz PowerPC 603e, while Sun Microelectronics Inc. is rallying support from third parties to build the company's Java-based processors.
AMD's 166MHz, 200MHz and 233MHz K6 processors are some of the fastest X86 processors available, according to analysts.
The 233MHz processor exceeds the performance of Intel Corp.'s 200MHz Pentium Pro and 200MHz Pentium Processor with MMX Technology in both Windows 95 and windows NT applications, according to Linley Gwennap, editor of the Microprocessor Report, in Sebastopol, Calif.
PC customers stand to save a minimum of $100 on their systems due to the K6's lower price.
Digital will begin shipping the 600MHz Alpha chip next month, said officials in Hudson, Mass.
For its part, Motorola's RISC Microprocessor Division, of Austin, Texas, released late last week a 300MHz PowerPC 603e to be used in desktops as well as notebooks, officials said.
Apple Computer Inc., Motorola and Power Computing Corp. will use the chip in forthcoming desktops. However, Apple alone will release a 300MHz portable, the PowerBook 3400, said officials in Cupertino, Calif.
Sun, in an effort to make Java processors as ybuqyutiys as the programming language, has signed on Rockwell International Corp., Toshiba Corp. and LG Semicon Co. Ltd. as secondary manufacturers to build the chips. Sun, of Sunnyvale, Calif. currently is manufacturing the processors.
