All,
I think it is good to not have a workshop at GGF-15. Many groups have
just one workshop a year and we have been having about three.
As for the regular APPS session, the one 90 minute session sounds Ok.
However, we need to think about how this session is perceived by the
attendees. At GGF-14 our attendance at the APPS meeting was very low,
since I believe that the meeting was perceived as a business meeting
for APPS. While this has been the case in the past for most of these
APPS sessions, I am not sure that new people are interested in
attending a business meeting for a group with which they are not
currently associated.
Perhaps we should emphasize the "birds of a feather" aspect of the
meeting -- as a place where application developers and users are
encouraged to come and exchange ideas. Perhaps we should call this an
"Interactive Application Developers and Users Forum or perhaps
Application Developers and Users Round Table Discussion." It would be
useful if we could kick this off with a 20 minute keynote talk by
someone, similar to the talk we had at our GGF-14 APPS meeting, which
unfortunately was not well publicized since it came up after the agenda
had already gone in. In a sense the APPS Forum meeting would be like
the discussion sessions at our recent workshops, with the keynote used
to stimulate thinking and provide some useful ideas for the attendees.
It would be useful to have both the keynote and the Forum aspect of
the session publicized in the agenda. For the forum keynote I would
suggest someone who is actively involved in developing an application
-- perhaps one that is in at least an alpha or beta version so that
they have some lessons learned. I also think it would be useful if
this were a commercial application since we have had lots of publicity
about various non-commercial applications over the years.
Any comments, other idea or suggestions for a keynote speaker?
