You wake up in a small dank cell. You blink the blur a little out of your eyes. The light of torches shines through the bars of your door, illuminating words scrawled on your ceiling: "wHo aM I?" Well? Who are you?
Gregory Swashbuckler, Space Knight
It's true. You don't seem to be able to remember who you are. Reaching for the memory, sometimes you think you might almost remember a life that was incredibly important, something so crucial you must never forget, but then it's gone. Like holding a wad of money that turns to water when you grip it. You sit up and look around. You're sitting on a cot in a dank cell. On one wall it says "don't forget to keep teaching the AI kindness." The other wall is blank save a small crack between stones near the bottom. A guard is walking by, whistling a tune you recognise as "pop" . What do you do?
ask guard who I am
You shake the bars: "Hey, guard, I've lost my memories! Do you know who I am? Do I ask this a lot?" The guard turns to look at you, begins saying "You ...!", then suddenly vanishes in a burst of dense dust. Their sword, keys and garments drop to the ground with loud "Clang!"s. Some of the dust blows down the hallway, other drifts over the torches and strengthens their flames amidst sparks. In the distance, you hear echoes: "Hey!" "What was that?" "Better go check it out ..." What do you do?
take keys
You reach for the keys, and can just barely touch their ring with your fingertips. When you do so, suddenly you feel filled with a sense of the guard. Patrolling hallways, playing poker in the barracks, spending time with a wife and children at home. The words complete in your ears as you touch the keys: "You ... guys need better care than this! I just came from somebody who said the exact same thing." "You need a reminder who you are? You're an apprentice alchemist named ThisIsFakeWakeUp. I'm not quite sure why you're in here, but people in this area are only due for a few months." What a relief to learn your name! Down the hall you hear, "They killed Butch! Somebody killed Butch! Raise the alarm!" A guard is rushing towards the keys and garments. What do you do?
all at same time: wake up, grab keys, force pull keys toward me, and ask new guard who I am so they turn to dust
A partial memory comes to you suddenly ... a bright light? a needle? a frightening invention with rows of square letters ... In struggling to quickly grasp the guard's keys, you accidentally nudge them out of reach, and your sense of being the guard vanishes. Suddenly there are two other guards in your cell -- it happened so fast -- and one is holding you. The guards are debating something exotic: "I've never found a simulation I couldn't escape, myself." "They don't seem to understand they're in there. What if they never see the real thing?" The first one turns and looks at you. "Gregory, we're not going to hurt you, but sometimes people don't respond well. Did you see the magic user that vaporized your guard?" What do you do?
wake up harder. also use butch's memories to intimidate the guards.
Struggling with a part of your mind that seems like it is in a direction that shouldn't exist, you wrench your eyes open again. You're reading email from a mailing list on the internet.
