A taxi? You can call them. Most will deliver a car at an appointed time if you want. Personal computers displaced mainframes as the core hardware business, and laptops have since eaten into a huge share of the personal computer market. Now mobile devices are eroding PC sales. None was ever seen as a threat to the existing dominant product and producer, but displacement happened nonetheless. Tapes replaced vinyl, CDs replaced tapes, but MP3s and iTunes-like services have replaced CDs. Cloud is displacing both the idea of storing your data on physical drives you own. Software as a service is chipping away at the idea of buying and owning software. And so on… In a lot of cases disruption ends up being a battle of big corporations for market share. Consumers and employees within the industry aren’t necessarily better or worse off when the smoke clears and a winner emerges with a new technology and business model. But the tech boom today is characterized by a another kind of disruption. It’s social disruption. New technologies and business models don’t just attack the existing dominant corporations; they attack social relations and transform non-business spheres of life into methodical instances of economic exchange from which the new tech innovators extract revenue. The tech boom is also characterized by disruption of smaller competitive markets by emergent tech monopolists backed ultimately by huge pools of private equity and giant, monopoly-seeking corporations. The ridesharing phenomenon reflects all of this and more. I would certainly prefer open-source P2P ride-sharing apps, which simply coordinate drivers and riders, with no central profit-stealing corporations. However, I don't believe that Uber or Lyft are profiting yet. They're relying on venture capital to build demand. They also provide legal assistance to drivers, and pay fines. I'm not sure how they deal with vehicles taken through civil forfeiture. So how would a pure P2P system deal that those issues? As long as hitchhiking is legal, one could argue that ride sharing is just a technological improvement. Back in the day, I recall ride boards, where you could arrange long-distance trips. And isn't an app equivalent to a bulletin board?

Nah, they are of the same 'sharing economy' bunch. Might do good for a while, but it's the same dirty business after they get big enough of a following.

Such issues can be addressed by the protocol. I would be cautious about it though as it implies some sort of global consent on the subject and anything global is a) technically involved and b) of dubious social merits. As a half-way alternative, it might be a system of opt-in policies where some property gets enforced amongst participants. That's just my speculation though.

The site isn't clear. But I finally found the Boardwalk page at https://press.swarm.city/swarm-city-boardwalk-overview-9a362f19411f So yes, "#Needaride", paid in tokens. The process of negotiating a ride sounds rather complex, however. I like the reputation-based trust aspect. Reminds me of SR, of course. That would arguably protect against malicious parties on both sides, in that cops, rapists, etc wouldn't get good ratings. But it'd be gameable, through building reputation in a closed malicious group, unless there were checks for reputation between the group and players overall. It is cool, though :)
