Snowden's timing was interesting, it overshadowed Manning's trial. His movie too was interesting. I have written down so notes on the movie. Also, my cell phone works fine in the microwave. Snowden was running around on two broken legs for weeks until it shattered, not from training but from jumping from his top bunk. By minute nine, Snowden is in interviews in large soundproof rooms with multiple sequential interviewers for the CIA. A couple seconds before minute twelve: "Snowden - Ed Snowden" Thirteen minutes, one quarter: "not sitting in a ditch eating MREs... another 9/11 it'll be your fault" Nineteen minutes, one quarter: "bought into liberal media" .... "my side is right" Twenty-one minutes: "Journalists don't report the full picture, we respect the fourth amendment.... FISA. We obtain warrants in secret to prevent suspects from knowing they're being investigated." Twenty-three minutes: Talks about thinthread, but without filters, drowning in data (???). Twenty-six minutes, one quarter: You don't have to agree with your politicians to be a patriot. Twenty-seven minutes: Put cellphones in microwave, but the camcorder cannot spy on you? Thirty-three minutes: portrays NSA as total nerds "council of warlocks" etc ... Fifty-two minutes: need experienced journalists to lead the public through a complex story One hour: empowering background music about how the government is spying on everyone One hour six minutes: A lot of people cruise through life, why can't I? One hour seven minutes, one half: Thomas Drake tried to changes things form the inside, but when things didn't work he went to the press It would be unfortunate if the EFF or some cypherpunk advised on this. There are certainly a lot of people in this country who would like to know about these "public wiretapping warrants" or how Thomas Drake went to the press (skipping Congress even?). This is subliminal messaging, it isn't a single picture in a frame, it is a liar talking to you to your face. Naturally there's no public psychological study on this, so the whole of psychology can be held unreliable in this regard. George Orwell noticed this in the two minutes hate. Greewald's timing was exact and deliberate: He reportedly fought with his editors to get the publication date of the PRISM slides pushed up to the opening day of Manning's court martial. This knocked Manning all the way out of the news.

Snowden's service record as reported never made sense to me, either. Pencil neck geeks rarely volunteer for Special Forces, are never taken when they do, and none of that happens during basic training.

The whole business about how Journalists have some elevated, priestly status, running through Snowden's narrative non-stop, always sticks out as bizarre. Journalists are a priestly caste, so let's hand a zillion or so classified documents to an attorney who rose to celebrity status as a political commentator? Yeah right... Not mentioned in the film, Mr. Greenwald's $250 million payout when he sold rights to the documents he reportedly promised Snowden would all be released to the public within ten days of breaking the first story. To date, every result of the Snowden Saga has been beneficial to the Security State. The State has won every legal challenge resulting from those releases, establishing its "right" to collect everything on everyone, restrained only by its own technical capabilities. As a bonus, it has been established that the DCI can lie to Congress and break into Congress members' computers with NO consequences of ANY kind. The great unwashed publick, already timid enough, is now on notice that Big Brother is in fact watching them. The Snowden Saga looked hinky to me from the beginning. My own guess is that he was/is an unwitting agent, a malleable malcontent spotted early by an Insider Threat program and picked from a field of candidates to front for a limited hangout aimed at achieving all the goals outlined above. Part of "fighting the Internet" and dealing with damaging leaks is to get out in front with your own narrative and dominate the market for leaks and leakers. Try putting a large plastic or glass container of water in the microwave, with the cell phone. (say, 1/2 gallon of water.)A microwave cavity, alone, is fairly well-shielded. But it is also very low-loss without a "load", an object within it that will absorb the 2.45 GHz microwave energy. Usually food, of course. One thing that would be useful is an app which showed the received signal strength for that cell phone, to a resolution much better than the usual 5-bar display. Net result so far seems to be some conscious anti-spying adoption of crypto by the public, and even by corps (really just metoo offering into that demand lest they lose base / face to competition, yet not so much in a way that would diminish their ability to mine and sell you). Some old feature phones had detailed numeric diag screens for the radio side as part of their firmware you could access by entering "secret" keypad codes. New smartphones might have some api, or AT commands, never looked into it.

Well put. A good radio receiver can have a dynamic range of 100 decibels. (or, a 10**10, a factor of 10 billion) range over which a signal can be input and still give a useful, even good-quality result. http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/receivers/dynamic_range/dynamic_range.... I could not quickly find a figure as to the typical shielding provided by a microwave oven, but let's suppose it's 60 db, or a factor of 1 million reduction. You can see that if the signal outside the oven is, say, 80 db over the minimum detectable level, putting it into that oven would reduce it to 80-60db, or 20 db, still a very useable signal. Thus, it would appear that the phone works fine in that oven. Adding a large container of water into that cavity could further reduce the signal level. Also, be aware that the effectiveness of shielding in a microwave oven may be frequency-dependent. In some cases, I have seen a "channel" within the door-seal structure that I suspect is designed to oscillate at a microwave oven's frequency: 2.45 GHz. Thus, it blocks that signal, but it might not do so well at blocking at a typical cell phone's frequencies, 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, and 1900 MHz. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_frequencies Combining use of a microwave, with wrapping a phone in a couple layers of aluminum foil, should work okay to block it. ×

Being in rooms that supply, or carrying around, both of these items is likely to be an uncommon situation, and difficult, impractical, and unreliable. So don't forget the obvious solution for the two most typical ops... 1) Don't carry a phone. or 2) If you have to carry, carry one with a removable [or switch modded] battery.
