Alright.Do you have a solution for this?
yes, do not use the pdf format.
I think he means: what format to use instead? -- Shawn K. Quinn <skquinn@rushpost.com>
Hi, The PDF book idea (for me where frequent big downloads are not an issue; some have had trouble with large attachments in the past) seems heartening and fun :) Regarding alternatives to PDF, a clear format is plaintext. This is easier to read and trust from a text-only environment, and can be smaller and easier to transfer. There are tools to convert pdfs or epubs to plaintext, but often the output needs a lot of hand-massaging to look nice. There are some good examples of plaintext books at the old project gutenberg website. However, I infer doing that conversion could add a lot of work to something that otherwise could be an easy share, so I don't personally have an opinion on it one way or the other.

It is difficult to include illustrations, diagrams, etc in plain text. At best, it's an alternative for only the simplest of texts where formatting, page numbers, font selection, etc are not as important as the text itself. Maybe I should have asked, instead: what's wrong with PDF? What makes something like (for example) DJVU so much better? -- Shawn K. Quinn <skquinn@rushpost.com>

you can't change font size. Pdf is a format for idiotic 'graphic design', not text. Indeed text isn't stored as text, but as 'graphic objects' at x,y coords. Apart from that, the 'format' is owned by a fascist US company - it's anything but 'free' or 'open access'. pdf is shit both from a technical and political point of view. funny you had to ask...
The purpose of simple formats like txt or html is to protect from viruses and trojans. The more you can understand and rebuild yourself about your system, the fewer gaping security holes. Most of these huge holes are in graphical setups like desktop environments or web browsers, and proprietary products or formats like those of adobe or microsoft. Most text-based people nowadays are probably experienced with viewing a pdf in text mode. Academic papers, for example, are distributed this way. It can be a little frustrating if the content is scanned without OCR. The PDF books are great and inspiring. I would add a more safe or accessible format only when and if capacity allows.
noting that punk and me here worked together to increase discouragement associated with a new positive share i'm guessing that new positive things could be worth much more than any possible criticism, at least until the positive parts have stabilised. similarly when supporting something in a disruptive behavior, it's likely good to preface any apparent support with concern or warning around the disruption; something to share recognition that what's going on there is not really the small topic.

plain text, or basic html/epub, I'd say.
