What he talks about is technically correct, although by concentrating on a one single aspect of bitcoin, I feel like he's loosing the overall picture, and therefor the entire point of why the bitcoin is what it is. In Bitcoin, projecting physical power will eventually bankrupt you, if you do not follow the rules set by the "logic", which in this case, is represented by digital signatures. At the same time, the signatures themselves would be worthless, without the blocks to put them in. Also, the use of the "bits" IS actually important. If bitcoin wasn't a monetary system, it would be pretty hard to pay for that demonstration of physical power. No tx fees = no reward = no resources to project physical power. It's the unique combination of various types of forces, applied by multiple groups of people, each of them with their own different goals and strategies, that makes the system tick. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]RonPaulWasR1ght 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (0 children) He has many more points which aren't reflected in the short clip on this post. For instance, he says it really should be called "BitPower", because each coin represents an amount of power that had to be expended to keep that information secure. He talks about information being the next dimension in resource securing and procuring, and that the "arms race" in that permissionless pursuit of that resource could well be control of the Bitcoin network (or one like it). His talk is incredibly well presented, philosophically brilliant and entirely superb. This young man knows what he's talking about. You can transfer BTC around the world in less time than using the swift system and at lower cost. You can take your entire net worth with you just by remembering your seed phrase and travel to another country and reestablish yourself with savings intact. Can’t do that with your savings account. BTC it’s backed 1 for 1 unlike our traditional fractional reserve banks. We witnessed this year a bunch of banks fail and the government basically stepped in in SVB’s situation and backed all deposits. Tax payers aren’t on that hook this time for this because this was not a bailout as in the bank meltdown of 09’, rather it’s a bail-in. The federal government waived the 250,000 FDIC cap to make depositors whole again but believe me when I say losses those WILL be socialized in some shape or form because banks will increase fees and such to cover this f up. When you invest in BTC there is no one on the other end of the blockchain investing your money into something that may go poof on your behalf. No counterparty risks involved! If you practice good security, self custody, every Satoshi you bought is your Satoshi until you sell and because no third party intermediaries have your funds and are buying assets with your funds. So in a sense, BTC better than a bank because 1 BTC will always be 1 BTC and everyone who bought BTC deserves the price they bought it at. Forgot to mention that BTC will only be 21 million ever while the fiat sitting in your bank account gets inflated away by money printing. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]intjdad 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago (0 children) I see your point. By encouraging / incentivizing Americans to buy and hold bitcoin, you are effectively reducing the access other nation states have to purchasing bitcoin - although pumping the price. Let's throw out a hypothetical: 50% of all liquid BTC is in the hands of Americans. The other 50% is held by people in other countries. By buying more, America pumps the price, making the monetary value stronger in other nations, but reducing the amount that ordinary people in those nations can afford to buy. A theory that could strengthen the narrative for bitcoin is countries adopting el salvador's approach to citizenship: "Give us x amount of BTC and you get citizenship here." boom. We just changed the game a bit here, didn't we? permalink embed save report give award reply [–]CupNoodlesKing 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (0 children) Sounds like a plan. You dont need to fork over $30000 for 1 Bitcoin. 1 BC is divided into 10 decimal places called Satoshis. Or Sats for short. It doesnt matter how much money you have. You can always get a piece of Bitcoin and your money will scale with it's value, at whatever point you buy it at. If Bitcoin doubles in value, so too does the value of your holdings. At the moment, the American dollar value drives its value, but that's not any different than the system of exchange is now. So foreign currency can buy in, and cash out, and still get the same exchange of value in whatever currency they preferred. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]ZealousidealLie9249 37 points38 points39 points 3 months ago (22 children) Suit and tie would make for better camouflage in a lecture hall... permalink embed save report give award reply [–]Mountain_Discount_94 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago (17 children) He’s probably on duty permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]dadlif3 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago (16 children) Civilian attire can be worn in place of a duty uniform. He doesn't have a contract per say but has likely extended his required serve time by an ADSO for the fellowship. Having said that he's got so much time in, it'd be kind of foolish to give up the retirement he'd hit at 20 years. But the comment is correct that you don't have the same rights while serving, especially considering a lot of his stuff appears in uniform which could be misconstrued as representing the opinion of the government from a regulation standpoint. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]TakingChances01 0 points1 point2 points 10 hours ago (3 children) Officers still have to commit to more time in service normally by the 2 or 3 years. Sometimes depending on how the army is paying for their degree they commit to 10 years at a time. You’re right that it’s not like an enlisted contract but they still can’t just resign, and as long as he’s been in he’d have to put in a retirement packet and go through that months long process. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]RedditUser381491 0 points1 point2 points 9 hours ago (2 children) That's not exactly true. They incur service obligations for specific events but don't always have a service obligation ongoing. IE they have a service ADSO for the captain career course if they go / some other military education. He could drop a REFRAD/UQR if he currently doesn't have an ADSO, not a retirement packet. Retirement packets are only for 20 years. At least in the Army, you can submit at minimum 6 months in advance for a REFRAD/UQR. 10 year agreements are normally flight or specialized. Most ROTC is 4 years, WP 5 years, and OCS 3 years in the Army. Chances are as a major he's completed all this initial obligation and might have an ADSO for his fellowship of a couple years. Source: Got out of the Army as an officer. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]TakingChances01 0 points1 point2 points 9 hours ago (1 child) You know more than I do about the officer side of it but I still am um under the impression anything past 10 years of service is considered retirement. It is interesting though that the book has argueably 0 classified info in it. BTC in itself is open source and completely public. The book only contains his thoughts surrounding the tech. I would assume this is the military distancing itself from what could be perceived as 'political' discourse. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Force1a 0 points1 point2 points 11 hours ago (0 children) That's most likely the case. They don't want it to seem like their branch of the military is pushing for this and while he works there they probably don't want him using his position as a selling point. But man... something happened to him after the book was published. His tweeting started to seem really erratic and unhinged and IMO he was showing some signs of mental instability, possibly having manic or hypomanic episodes. I don't think his subsequent periodic absences or this latest development mean what people think they mean. If you weren't following, Lopp write a critique of Jason's theory based on articles and podcasts. He got endlessly hammered by Jason and his supporters for critiquing a thesis that he hadn't read, even though he was clear that he hadn't read the thesis and was critiquing the ideas that had been put forth in quite a lot of detail prior to the book being released. After a bunch of badgering he finally sat down and read the whole thing and published a more in depth critique based on the book itself: https://blog.lopp.net/softwar-thesis-review/ Jason's last tweet was the next day, just a picture of him presumably driving up to the Pentagon. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]lurk4343 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (0 children) There is a link in this review. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]redrocketman74 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago (0 children) One more point: when I browse the Systems Design and Management section of the MIT thesis collection I see a large batch of papers with an issue date of Feb 2023 and nothing more recent. Jason graduated in June. Entirely likely that the theses for his graduating class will be published in a batch sometime in the next couple of months. His statement here is disingenuous at best: For those asking what's been going on w/me, I was ordered to take SOFTWAR down & asked to stop talking about the subject publicly. Doesn't appear on MIT's library either. This might be a crazy theory, but hear me out. Maybe, just maybe, he's in fact not being taken seriously and DoD wasn't crazy about him mentioning Space Force in his Amazon bio to try to add legitimacy to it, and maybe he's overstating his role as an advisor to the DoD and White House: Jason "Spook" Lowery is an active-duty astronautical engineer in the US Space Force. Jason has a decade of experience as a weapon system developer and technical advisor for US senior officials. He has advised US senior leaders on the national strategic security implications of Bitcoin, to include the Office of the President of the United States, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Murtux[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago (1 child) haven't seen any link to digitized copies... could you point into the right direction? permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]redrocketman74 6 points7 points8 points 1 day ago (0 children) It's a pdf and I can't vouch for the source, download at your own risk. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xF6qA8PUHohxn3gwAtzz7oPmR2WGl7vK/view permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]solomonsatoshi 6 points7 points8 points 1 day ago (14 children) Would have bought it if price had been reasonable ~ it was so expensive to buy. Yeah, you are right. Which is so messed up because we are, as the supreme document outlining the rights and protections of the country says, CREATED EQUAL. NOT SUBORDINATE. If our best and brightest are being coerced into sacrificing their freedoms for the sake of protecting this nation, then they are being abused by the system, its a classic example of tyranny of the people in power. Why is it okay for a congressman to break the rules but not the very people defending us all with their lives? We need to gut the system and start over. It doesn't make sense the government has the right to violate everyone else's rights, especially soldiers, in order to protect their hegemony and their monopoly on power in the country. They side with big banks to control the country with an iron fist. Bitcoin will bring about a separation of money from state. It's been a long time coming and it won't take much longer now. Our people, sovereign individuals, that constitute this country are the people who should matter equally. Not just the rich and politically-motivated senators and house representatives. Or maybe not. That could also be a hilariously bad idea and backfire. He’s referring to the longterm implications of global trade happening in Bitcoin and how mining hashrate percentages in each country will effectively act as the base wealth transfer direction between nations. His theory that countries will compete with each other to control hashrate makes total sense to me. Either directly or through incentives, a country with more hashrate per capita will be subsidized by the transaction fees of the rest of the world. We will likely see country level subsidies aimed at expanding local hashrate to push other countries into a loss (in an attempt to push mining out elsewhere and control more in the long run without the ongoing subsidy). Lots of interesting game theory to think about and it doesn’t really have anything to do with classifying Bitcoin as violence. If anything he’s arguing that it’s a legitimate stand in for violence. “Economic violence” in the sense that its “physical power projection” is all he’s saying. It’s provocative wording. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Background_Target_80 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (1 child) Kind of, he is correct that bitcoin converts energy into property defense. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Fiach_Dubh 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (0 children) Non violently permalink embed save parent report give award reply [+]KeyPhotojournalist96 comment score below threshold-8 points-7 points-6 points 5 months ago (0 children) Correct. Either the transaction happened on the blockchain or it didn’t, and that 1/0 state could be turned into a method of global computing. Normally we want computers to be faster and cheaper. But when you’re trying to protect important things (say, the use of US nuclear missiles) it makes sense to use the beefiest/most secure network to protect that information/computing even if it’s “slower”. He talks a lot about power projection as a barrier to keep enemies from attacking you, and this led to some semantic dustups around the definition of a weapon and the definition of violence. But the ultimate point being that the Bitcoin network itself has immense importance to whatever nations can integrate the defensive power proof of work provides, because anything else is a lot more susceptible to hostile attacks. I’m not smart enough to know if it’s all a big PsyOp by the american government, but anyone who writes it off whole-cloth because they get triggered over the words weapon or violence needs to take a deep breath and use their brains a little bit more. Is there a reason I should read this? permalink embed save report give award reply [–]infii123 35 points36 points37 points 5 months ago (10 children) No idea, but here's a short description. This is a high-definition, color-printed manuscript of an academic thesis written by Major Jason Lowery, an active-duty US Space Force astronautical engineer and US National Defense Fellow at MIT tasked with advising senior US military leaders about the national strategic implications of Bitcoin. In this thesis, Lowery presents a novel theory to the US Department of Defense that Bitcoin doesn't just represent a peer-to-peer cash system, it also (and more importantly) represents a new form of digital-age warfare that will transform national security, cyber security, and possibly even the base-layer architecture of the internet. Using scientific concepts from biology, evolution, anthropology, political science, and computer theory, Lowery summarizes the dynamics of power projection in human society and provides an argument for why emerging proof-of-work technologies (namely Bitcoin) will have a dramatic impact on how humans organize, cooperate, and compete on a global scale by empowering populations to project physical power in, from, and through cyberspace. Major Lowery concludes that Bitcoin represents a national strategic imperative that the US should support and adopt as quickly as possible, else it risks losing its lead as a global superpower in the 21st century. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]maybeitsjustu 28 points29 points30 points 5 months ago (3 children) You had me at "color-printed"! permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]waldoagave 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago (0 children) Only 29 cents young chap! permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Umpire_State_Bldg 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago (1 child) Dude! For a long time I have thought that the US has the most to lose from the global adoption of bitcoin. This is because the US has enjoyed great advantage by having its national currency used as the world reserve currency. The US global influence over the last 100 years is closely, if not directly tied to this advantage. The best thing the US could do would be to be among the first global powers to Integrate bitcoin, which probably would be painful at first, but failing to do so timely is likely of far greater consequence. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]cliff_smiff 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children) If this is going to be the US' strategy, why shout it from the rooftops all over social media and every podcast known to man? permalink embed save parent report give award reply [+]Umpire_State_Bldg comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 5 months ago (0 children) it also (and more importantly) represents a new form of digital-age warfare that will transform national security, cyber security, and possibly even the base-layer architecture of the internet. The idea here is: Bitcoin is superior to violence. When force can be used to take away your posessions - violence is viable and will be used. When that doesn't work, it makes more sense to mine your own Bitcoin in a peaceful competition against others. permalink embed save parent report give award reply [–]Top-Dragonfruit-8199 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (2 children) I recommend people list to Lowery’s conversation with Marty Bent to hear Lowery himself pitch his idea to someone like Marty who is very very critical of his thesis.
