Fully FOSS Tails-like OS
I wanted to announce a preview version (0.0) of my fully free (libre) and open source operating system loosely based on concepts from the Tails Linux distribution... It is called "heads", and more can be seen at https://heads.dyne.org heads takes it's basic workflow concepts from Tails, but with a few quirks of its own. It provides a grsecurity patched kernel, and more security features, along with elegant, de-poetterized minimalism. The base system used for heads is Devuan (https://devuan.org) which was made as an answer to Debian switching to systemd, and the same way heads was made - as an answer to Tails switching to systemd. -- ~ parazyd GPG: 0333 7671 FDE7 5BB6 A85E C91F B876 CB44 FA1B 0274

Coming in the following days. I haven't had time to compile a toolchain (the build machine I'm using is 64-bit). -- ~ parazyd GPG: 0333 7671 FDE7 5BB6 A85E C91F B876 CB44 FA1B 0274
Hi, I will use this list since I cannot lurk your list at: https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/list/heads.en.html
parazyd: I wanted to announce heads (https://heads.dyne.org)
Sweet! I was just fudging Alpine to be Tails-like but this is less work for me!!!
basic workflow concepts from Tails
What do you mean by "workflow"?
a few quirks of its own.
Some thoughts/questions: + dd to USB stick was smooth. + Boot log being visible provides system boot status, which is nice. + Why is there a login of 'luther'? + User specified administrative account passphrase, and option to have no account at all. + Heads provided passphrase did not grant root. sudo fails. + Mate did not load. I guessed at 'startmate'. I have more thoughts but I will keep playing with it. Thanks! Wordlife, Spencer

I'll try to enable lurker tomorrow.

Perhaps a poor choice of wording. I had the torification in mind...

+ User specified administrative account passphrase, and option to have no account at all. + Heads provided passphrase did not grant root. sudo fails.
sudo is not enabled for luther except in the case of tomb(1). Use 'su' Also see this screencast: https://heads.dyne.org/heads-short.webm (note on how to change the root password to something easier)
+ Mate did not load. I guessed at 'startmate'.
MATE is not included in this 0.0 release. And I'm even contemplating whether not to include it all in future releases. AwesomeWM is doing its job well and if I add a few more features it will be quite usable for everyone. Also helps me to avoid policykit and consolekit crap.
I have more thoughts but I will keep playing with it. Thanks!
Let me know :) -- ~ parazyd GPG: 0333 7671 FDE7 5BB6 A85E C91F B876 CB44 FA1B 0274
Hi,
parazyd: torification
Gotcha!
luther
Usability issues arise from an unfamiliar name. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, though! I will spam your list more about this later.
Use 'su'
Will do.
MATE is not included
Good. Less is more.
Let me know :)
Will do. Wordlife, Spencer

I've released 0.1 today: https://heads.dyne.org/news/2017/03/on-the-road-to-freedom.html I won't be spamming the list anymore, but this acts as the first "real" release, so just FYI :) Best regards -- ~ parazyd GPG: 0333 7671 FDE7 5BB6 A85E C91F B876 CB44 FA1B 0274
