I imagine the yanks are not too displeased. Having him imprisoned in an embassy and free to talk to the press was a bit embarrassing; having him imprisoned in a Brit jail without charge leaves them free to talk to the press and say any old bollocks they like without making any real commitments or worrying about First Amendment issues. I'm pretty sure the Brits could have delivered him if they had really tried. Which they probably would have done if the yanks pressed. Although of course, in 2003 the Yanks got greedy, the Brits got needy, and the resulting US/UK extradition treaty is very one-sided... Peter Fairbrother
