—— in my country checkers and chess are played on boards that are identical in their basic structure. it is eight squares by eight squares, in a chckerboard pattern of black and non-black squares (checkerboard means each orthogonally adjacent square is of the other color, everywhere on the board, so the squares make diagonals of the same colors) and people who play chess a lot rotate the board so a black colored square is to the left end of the nearest row. this works for two players if they sit opposite, which is assumed but not always done.
