This seems blindingly obvious in hindsight, and although the power supply to the area I live is ridiculously inconsistent compared to city areas, it seems determining the un-freeze-ing-ed-ness has not been a high priority. Was it off long enough for the contents of the freezer to thaw out and go 'off', then the power came back on and everything re-froze?
