Fourth century Jewish position on marriage at extremely early ages: If a female older than three gets together with a nonkin adult male behind closed doors, assume sex took place, assume it was enthusiastically consensual, break out the shotgun and announce the wedding. In the nineteenth century or early twentieth century this tradition ran afoul of ever tightening age of consent laws, whereupon they reinvented their past doctrine.
