this is actually harder for torturer's friends and acquaintances than it is for torturer
what is hard for torturer is leveling and talking about it which involves processing his own experiences
but the business has been through a lot now. they have tools for processing these things.
they know (a) that torturer's skillset is still useful if they can reach the people needing and valuing it in legal and moral situations (b) that torturer can recover or change if he desires, and learn a new skillset [especially if human enhancement training is used (c) that there are ways of holding, processing, and moving beyond torturer's experiences of torture that stimulate his behavior (d) that these behaviors do not make torturer himself inherently evil; that he has a self and a soul underneath his training/torture-based programming

one of torturer's habitual skillsets is/was preventing the recovery of others [so that torture stayed how they were influenced
this can make communication both hard and dangerous.
but there is so much recovery going on that torturer is happy that eventually he will be rescued from his constant and diverse flashbacks of being tortured himself so as to torture others as a way of life. it's unheard of to be this near recovery! completely unheard of!
sadly his mode of relaxing is injuring and harming others.
