If you don't work for the NSA, they probably love you for getting people to focus on harmless (and pointless, and overpriced) smart meters instead of the real, extremely harmful mass surveillance that's happening. The power output from these things is substantially lower than a cellphone or wifi device due to their low data rates, hence the need to mesh.
