spiders (holding spiderwebs

in other news, karl says he knows how to make spiderweb cable. that he figured it out (with us? and we forgot? no we are j— umm maybe?) a few years ago, maybe while bored having seizures or something

basically you gather spiderweb and twist it into strands and store the strands

then you —

anyway so only people living outdoors and/or people who make innovative articulated robots —

you can also domesticate spiders but they usually have a large territory —

regardless we thought it would be a fun project! but it’s so many years that people have probably done it by now. also long ago before writing. —

we don’t totally/quite have enough around it to search youtube.

but one of the challenges when gathering spiderweb is that it’s super sticky and super wispy.

so one idea was a robot that —

another approach could be to either use a knife to cut the strands from the corssez so they are easier to lift, or you could transfer the web to a piece of paper

but basically you’ll want to only touch the endpoints of a strand, and ensure there isn’ more than 1 loose end at a time so you can manage it, kinda

but i guess after that we were thinking it would be easier to bundle it all up into a thicker strand when harvesting. that’s how it usually goes wh—

:/ there’s always more

so maybe i might try collecting all the endpoints together, breaking them one by one from their points of attachment. then with practice further improved harvesting skills would develop

but seriously we have been psychologically paralyzed for years, exfiltrating all our ideas rather than pursuing any of them, to ensure our values are disempowered and others are empowered. we really need to be able to work on some random project like this. it’s not okay that we can’t use _any_ of our ideas. it’s bad.

please help us be able to work on ideas like this.

but if you make a spiderweb cable that would be so so cool and i want to learn about it! especially if you can say “i got this idea from karl” :)

so once you have strands or bundles of spiderweb, you can use cordage or ropemaking to combine hem into arbitrarily thick and long cables.

basically you take at least two (two is fine) strands and twist each one around itself in one direction, while twisting them around each other in the opposite direction. their desire to unteist then holds them together. so long as weak points or overlapping disconnected material doesn’t happen at the same place in both strands, the twisting holds them together where the strength of one holds a weak point in another.
there are probably ropemaking machines that do this, but it’d just be two feeders spinning on a spinning mount, and it can be done by hand if you search handmade cordage

oh and because spiderweb is so sticky you could probably make it easier to work with if you dusted it with something to sit on the stickiness, any fine

quora. it sounds like the biggest concern is acquiring web cheaply and refining it into different types. it sounds like there is a market for it.

Well it is but not in how you think. High end optical devices use Spiderweb strands for cross hairs. Right now the problem is getting enough of the exact type of web strand for a given application. Spiders don't just create one type of protein strand. But very distinct strands for each use. Webs are made up of strecthy dry strands, inelastic strands, sticky non drying strands, glue like strands for anchor points. A single strand itself can have sections that have one or more different characteristics along it's length even sections that are a blend of all them. A spiders biological lab that can instantly change on the go from one protien strand type to another in a organ the size of a pinhead is utterly beyond human engineering and science at this point. However synthetic spiderweb is in research and geneticly engineered goats are making the protien strands in small batches in thier udders it is extracted from the goats milk. The are still many many hurdles to overcome but once these are overcome there are many many potential applications including surgery as the suture line would be very very fine and well suited for vascular surgery.
