A few years ago GGreenwald was on Reddit IAmA discussing hardware vulns in the wake of Snowden's revelations. In a side thread there were a number of people taking (educated) guesses from what he was saying about which Comm chips Greenwald was discussing, and at that time, for some intuitive reason, I got to thinking about VPNs being advertised in mainstream computer culture at the time, to mom, pops, and grandma, that want you to have their own 'special' device to make a connection.
