Is this level of spam normal for this list? You're right. There's been scarcely any spam today. Don't worry, though; it's sure to pick up over the weekend. -- Jim Dixon VBCnet GB Ltd http://www.vbc.net tel +44 117 929 1316 fax +44 117 927 2015

It works this time! Okay, I'll bite, what's down? The last two times you posted this link, it coincided with a servic dying. First, it was mail, then it was httpd. So what is it this time? On Fri, 30 Mar 2001, Jim Choate wrote:

Hi John, 'mail', 'httpd'? I don't have a clue what the hell you're talking about. einstein has a 54d19h32m uptime as I write this. None of my services have been down or non-functional in that time. You need to have your DNS checked, it's not picking IP's correctly. Specifically when it is given a name->IP lookup that has two, yes I say two, IP's provided. einstein is supposed to have two NIC's installed. I removed one because I isolated my internal network completely because of a variety of exploits. As a result that IP isn't available and it times out, your services (be they httpd, mail, or whatever) should then try the alternate IP. Apparently they're not. It's worth noting that timeout may be as great as the default 2m high level TCP timeouts. You can try flushing your DNS cache's and try it again or you could set a direct IP-hostname link in your /etc/hostname file. 204.96.2.99 einstein.ssz.com einstein On Fri, 30 Mar 2001, John Galt wrote:

It's pretty light actually. Back in 1996/7 you could have seen thousands of spem by now. Your problem is toad.com - there is no one central cypherpunks list, it is in effect a number of lists that cross-post to each other. They impose various degrees of editorial control, or not. (Almost) all of them are open to postings from anyone - one of the points of the list is to be a place where anonymous or unpopular postings are permitted. The list working out of toad.com has some known problems and it is probably not a good idea to be using it. Jim Choate will probably be along in a minute to tell you about his web pages at http://einstein.ssz.com/cdr/index.html which would also fill you in on some background and point you at some of the other mailing lists. There has been a lot of good said about the cypherpunks@lne.com list, which I haven't tried myself yet so can't comment on in detail. I think I'm using majordomo@sirius.infonex.com at the moment, it's hard to keep track. (Like a lot of people here I tend to join & unjoin using different addresses - also I post from an address different from the one I read it on)
