Okay, so the effective SHA-1 length is 138 bits instead of full 160 - so what's the big deal? It is still way more than, say, MD5
In applications where collisions are important, SHA1 is now effectively 69 bits as opposed to 80. That's not very much, and odds are there will be an improvement on this attack in the near future. Eric
