AES winner to be announced Monday.
I can't get the web page myself, but the appended message is in sci.crypt today: Peter Trei ------------------------ From: Jim Gillogly <jim@acm.org> 1:03 PM Subject: Re: Deadline for AES... Tim Tyler wrote:
No official announcement of the date has been posted yet on http://csrc.nist.gov/encryption/aes/
The new notice just went up at this site: announcement to be made 2 Oct with simultaneous webcast. They (explicitly) won't say yet how many algorithms have been chosen as the AES. There's no mention of new versions of SHA-* with appropriately longer hashes. -- Jim Gillogly Sterday, 8 Winterfilth S.R. 2000, 17:00 12.19.7.10.12, 8 Eb 15 Chen, Fifth Lord of Night

So NIST will be silent for three more days. How about the finalist submitters? Did *they* tell anything? I'll bet NIST has contacted (or will contact) them regarding the forthcoming announcement. And the e-mail address <ptrei@rsasecurity.com> means that at least the RC6 team is easily accessible, isn't it? Paulo Barreto.

"I'll bet the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has contacted (or will contact) the winners of Oscars..." There are stock market implications for who gets (and who does not get) the winning AES pick. So it is unlikely that the winners will be announced prior to the public announcement. I'm not saying wink-and-nod leakage has not now occurred. There is no need to alert the winner to be there, given that _all_ of the contenders are likely to have paid lobbyists and staffers there. I may be completely wrong on this. Maybe word got out. Maybe this is why RSAS fell $2.80 today. Maybe not. --Tim May -- ---------:---------:---------:---------:---------:---------:---------:---- Timothy C. So, what odds do the Vegas bookies give for the different algorithms? "The electron, in my judgment, is the ultimate precision-guided munition." -John Deutsch, CIA Director
