Re: [liberationtech] BB in the news again
No doubt the UK Police will use it's powers to get RIM to disclose the phone numbers used in specific areas (cell towers) and then request call records. The London police cells are overflowing with alleged rioters, many will have had their 'smart' phones impounded for later forensic analysis. The disturbances in London/UK are likely to be a test bed for Police and Forensic Science analysis of digital footprints etc RIM to turn in BlackBerry-using looters after London riots "Catching the fire-starters retrospectively is possible as RIM can pass over decrypted versions of BBM chatter." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/08/blackberry_riots/ BlackBerry blog hacked with riot-related threats http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/09/blackberry_blog_riot_hack/ http://www.bigbrotherwatch.org.uk/home/2011/08/london-riots-and-social-media... http://twitter.com/#!/search/londonriots Frank ----- Original message ----- From: "Bernal,PA (pgr)" <P.A.Bernal@lse.ac.uk> To: "Katrin Verclas" <katrin@mobileactive.org> Cc: "Stanford tech list List" <liberationtech@lists.stanford.edu> Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2011 14:33:37 -0400 Subject: Re: [liberationtech] BB in the news again As a matter of interest, the NYTimes has it a little wrong: Lammy's not a minister in the government, he's an opposition MP, representing the area where the riots started. Quoting from the New York Times:
David Lammy, Britain's intellectual property minister, also called for a suspension of Blackberry's encrypted instant message service. Many rioters, exploiting that service, had been able to organize mobs and outrun the police, who were ill-equipped to monitor it. "It is unfortunate, but for the very short term, London can't have a night like the last," Mr. Lammy said in a Twitter post.
Officials at Research in Motion, the corporate parent of Blackberry, declined to comment on whether the service would be suspended. But the company, based in Waterloo, Ontario, issued a statement saying: "We feel for those impacted by recent days' riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can."
