In Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, it is now a federal crime to state orally or in writing to any federal administrative or law enforcement officer, during the course of an official investigation that you don't know what they are talking about if in fact you do.
How can something be a federal crime in only 3 states?
18 USC 1001 is a crime in every state, but interpretations of the law may vary by circuit. We're talking about the Fifth Circuit here, looks like. --Mike
