Apparently, some kind of tanker hit something else and set of a chain reaction killing thousands and wiping out the town
After several earlier events (the biggest being Oppau in Germany in 1921, which left a crater the size of a city block), fire safety folk were given an incentive to discover the true chemistry of ammonium nitrate.
