When I first saw the name, I remembered my misspent youth: Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus (1960) USA 1960 Color Produced by Walt Disney Productions
Which proves little (though it is suggestive). People get names for a variety of reasons, and before 1960, there would have been little reason *not* to use the name.
