You might want to check out Erlang http://www.erlang.org - a programming language designed to be all about communications and concurrency. Programs in this language need not even be aware that they're distributed. It's a functional language, though, so you might be up for a steep learning curve if you've never used a declarative language (Miranda, Haskell, Mercury, Prolog, Lisp...)
You might also want to check out the E language <http://www.erights.org/>. It offers distributed computation, encrypted communications, public key based identity, optimistic computation, and event loop concurency.
