No. Using ethnic characteristics as a criteria for attaching emotional labels is racism. If you have a gut level dislike of Japanese (blacks, jews, etc), because they are Japanese (blacks, jews, etc), that's racism. Of course, I grant you that on a mailing list it isn't possible to know whether the human Tim May is "really" a racist, so it would have been more accurate to say that the persona "Tim" on this mailing list is clearly racist.
